frequent questions
What are the clinical aspects of moles?
To perform dermatoscopes
- They can be flat (on the skin) or raised
- They can have several colors: brown, black, pink or skin-colored
- The size can vary from a few mm to a few centimeters (especially congenital ones)
- They can be located anywhere on the body
- They are usually round, with a well-defined contour, but they can also have other shapes
a, the doctor will use a dermoscope (a device that has a light source and a magnifying glass) to carefully examine the lesion on the skin. The doctor may cover the lesion with a translucent substance to get a clearer picture.
When should we see the dermatologist?
- Moles must be checked annually by a dermatologist. Dermatoscopy is the analysis that "sees" in depth the characteristics of moles and guides the therapeutic approach (continued monitoring or excision)
- When moles change their characteristics: they grow in size, change color, become symptomatic (they itch, pain)
- When we notice new lesions appearing on the skin.
- When we have a family history of skin cancer or have numerous moles on our body
Why remove moles?
- Many times, however, moles are aesthetically disturbing when they are located in visible areas: on the face, neck, décolleté.
- The embossed ones are very easily exposed to trauma.
- To rule out skin cancer (melanoma).
What are the treatment methods?
- Radiofrequency or laser destruction. The procedure is painless because it is performed with local anesthesia and the healing is quick.
- Surgical excision for atypical or large nevi. The removed part is histopathologically analyzed to exclude a malignant lesion.
Will I be scarred?
It is impossible to cut the skin without leaving a mark, so there is always a more or less visible scar. The quality of the scar depends on the location on the body, the size of the excision and the type of scarring of each person. There are people who have an exaggerated response in the healing process and develop unaesthetic scars (hypertrophic or keloid).
