frequent questions
What is blepharoplasty? / What is the difference between upper and lower blepharoplasty?
Upper blepharoplasty is surgery that removes excess fat and skin from the upper eyelids.
Lower blepharoplasty is surgery that removes excess skin from the lower eyelids.
When do you see the results and how long does the effect last?
Results can be seen immediately after the intervention, through the absence of excess folds. Instead, the final result can be appreciated 1-2 months after the procedure, when the scars become invisible.
What are the correct indications for a blepharoplasty?
- A tired look.
- The appearance of "bags under the eyes".
- Folds on the lower eyelids.
- Dark circles.
- Excess skin on the upper eyelids.
- Feeling of tired eyes and heavy eyelids;
- The impossibility of makeup on the eyelids.
- Narrowing of the visual field.
How is the pain after the procedure?
Blepharoplasty is a painless procedure. A simple tightening sensation is felt in the eyelids. The intervention can be performed with either local anesthesia or general anesthesia, depending on the patient's preferences, although most opt for local anesthesia.
How do I prepare for the procedure?
It is recommended that you avoid the following medications and supplements before surgery because they are associated with increased bleeding: aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, etc.), naproxen sodium (Aleve, etc.), naproxen (Naprosyn), and any other similar herbal medicines or supplements.
It is also important to stop smoking a few weeks before the operation. Smoking can negatively affect your ability to heal after surgery.
How long does the recovery take?
After surgery, the eye area may be inflamed and possibly bruised, and you will experience discomfort that can be managed with prescription medication. It will be necessary to apply eye drops.* For women: it is necessary to avoid make-up for 5-7 days until the threads are removed.
Discomfort is usually minimal and can be reduced with common medications. It is recommended to sleep on your back with your head slightly elevated to facilitate healing. After 5-7 days, the threads will be removed.
Even if hospitalization is not mandatory after the intervention, it is recommended to rest for 2-3 days. You will feel the need to sleep more than usual, as the eyes may be more tired, which is beneficial for a quick and effective recovery.
The results of the operation will be visible immediately and the incisions will be discreet. The result will last between 5 and 10 years, depending on your body.
What are the risks of the blepharoplasty procedure?
The potential risks of blepharoplasty should be taken seriously, as with any other surgery. These may include:
– Infection and bleeding;
– Difficulty in closing the eyes or other problems with the eyelids;
– The possibility of visible scars;
– The sensation of dry and irritated eyes;
– Potential skin discoloration;
– The need for a subsequent surgical intervention;
– Risk of damage to the eye muscles;
– The general risks associated with any surgery, such as reactions to anesthesia and the formation of blood clots,
– Temporarily blurred vision or, in rare cases, loss of vision.
Only after a consultation with one of the doctors at the clinic can we assess to what extent these risks are relevant to you. Factors such as lifestyle, medical history and genetic predisposition will influence the likelihood of experiencing any of these problems.
